JOHNSON CITY — Frontier Health’s Brenda Sprinkle graduated from the Partners in Policymaking Program sponsored by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities. The Partners in Policymaking program is designed for individuals with developmental disabilities and parents of young children with developmental disabilities.

Twenty-one advocates for the rights of people with disabilities joined a nationwide network of parents and self-advocates who are working together to create systems’ change.  The 2008 Partners in Policymaking class convened for two-day training sessions eight times monthly to help them become knowledgeable and effective community advocates.

The program includes advocacy training, resource development, and skill building workshops led by state and national experts. Topics covered include the history of the disability movement, self-advocacy, independent living, supported employment, building inclusive communities, natural supports, legislative advocacy, assistive technology, communication, and team building.

Each partner developed a project utilizing their newfound skills to complete the training.  Partners often complete the program, realizing they have the power to improve the lives of all Virginians. As a graduate, Brenda joins nearly 300 current alumni of the Virginia PIP program, and thousands who graduated across the country.
